Atchafalaya Basin, Louisiana (08-11 March 2010)

During the night throughout the week, I went out with Bones and his coworker Laura who work for IAP World Services, Inc. at the USGS National Wetlands Research Center to sample for amphibians and other herpetofauna at various localities throughout the Atchafalaya Basin. It was a lot of fun and we caught 12 of the 13 species of anurans found in the Basin. Although I must say that it's a little spooky traveling through the swamp in thick fog after a thunderstorm.

Species:

Alligator mississippiensis (American Alligator) 3 adults and subadults
Nerodia fasciata confluens (Broad-Banded Watersnake) 2 adults
Nerodia sp. (Unknown Watersnake) 1 adult
Agkistrodon piscivorus leucostoma (Western Cottonmouth) 2 subadults
Anolis carolinensis (Green Anole) 2 adults
Hemidactylus turcicus turcicus (Mediterranean Gecko) 4 adults
Scincella lateralis (Ground Skink) 3 adults
Trachemys scripta elegans (Red-Eared Slider) 10+ adults and subadults basking
Bufo fowleri (Fowler's Toad) 3 adults and subadults
Acris blanchardi (Blanchard's Cricket Frog) 20+ observed, TMTC calling
Pseudacris crucifer (Spring Peeper) 15+ observed, TMTC calling
Pseudacris fouquettei (Cajun Chorus Frog) 2 observed, TMTC calling
