I went with Dylan Dittrich-Reed to Big Creek in Cocke Co., Tennessee, to look for Shovel-Nosed Salamanders for a project he is working on and we were not disappointed. We saw two adults, two juveniles, and two larvae in total. Additionally, we found a few fish species and other salamanders. Weather was slightly chilly and overcast with temps in the mid 40s and water temps below that. My feet numbed and turned into rocks in a couple of hours of wading.
Amphibians:
Desmognathus marmoratus (Shovel-Nosed Salamander) 2 adults, 2 juveniles, and 2 larvae
Eurycea wilderae (Blue Ridge Two-Lined Salamander) 2 adults (gravid females) and 4 larvae
Fishes:
Campostoma anomalum (Central Stoneroller) 5
Cottus bairdii (Mottled Sculpin) 4
Etheostoma swannanoa (Swannanoa Darter) 7
Desmognathus marmoratus (Shovel-Nosed Salamander)
