Cypress Island Preserve in St. Martin Parish and Atchafalaya Basin (26 May 2009)

Today Bones and I went out to St. Martin Lake in St. Martin Parish to look for snakes and turtles. Weather wasn't the greatest in the morning with scattered t-storms that dumped a considerable amount of rain. However, in the early afternoon the skies cleared a bit and the reptiles came out. 

Bone's House in Lafayette, LA:

     Trachemys scripta elegans (Red-Eared Slider) DOR adult
     Anolis carolinensis (Green Anole) 1 adult
     Hemidactylus turcicus turcicus (Mediterranean Gecko)
     Bufo nebulifer (Gulf Coast Toad) 1 adult

St. Martin Lake:

     Alligator mississippiensis (American Alligator) 7 subadults and adults
     Coluber constrictor latrunculus (Blackmask Racer) 5 adults and 1 DOR
     Lampropeltis getula holbrooki (Speckled Kingsnake) 1 adult
     Nerodia fasciata confluens (Broad-Banded Watersnake) 3 adults
     Thamnophis proximus orarius (Gulf Coast Ribbonsnake) 3 adults
     Anolis carolinensis (Green Anole) 4 adults
     Eumeces fasciatus (Five-Lined Skink) 1 adult
     Scincella lateralis (Ground Skink) TMTC adults
     Pseudemys concinna (River Cooter) 5+ adults
     Trachemys scripta elegans (Red-Eared Slider) TMTC adults
     Notophthalmus viridescens louisianensis (Central Newt) 5+ larvae
     Acris blanchardi (Blanchard's Cricket Frog) TMTC calling and observed
     Bufo nebulifer (Gulf Coast Toad) 3 adults
     Gastrophryne carolinensis (Eastern Narrow-Mouthed Toad) TMTC calling
     Hyla chrysoscelis (Cope's Gray Treefrog) 10+ adults calling
     Hyla cinerea (Green Treefrog) 10+ adults calling
     Rana catesbeiana (American Bullfrog) 5+ adults calling
     Rana clamitans clamitans (Bronze Frog) TMTC calling and observed
     Rana grylio (Pig Frog) 5+ adults calling
     Rana sphenocephala utricularia (Southern Leopard Frog) TMTC adults and metamorphs
     
That evening, Graham Reynolds came down and we all went out to the Atchafalaya Basin to look for herps. Anurans were out in full force. Unfortunately, the snakes were not.

     Acris blanchardi (Blanchard's Cricket Frog) TMTC calling and observed
     Bufo nebulifer (Gulf Coast Toad) TMTC calling and observed
     Gastrophryne carolinensis (Eastern Narrow-Mouthed Toad) TMTC calling
     Hyla chrysoscelis (Cope's Gray Treefrog) TMTC calling and observed
     Hyla cinerea (Green Treefrog) TMTC calling and observed
     Pseudacris crucifer (Spring Peeper) 1 adult
     Pseudacris fouquettei (Cajun Chorus Frog) 1 adult and 1 metamorph
     Rana catesbeiana (American Bullfrog) TMTC calling and observed
     Rana clamitans clamitans (Bronze Frog) TMTC calling and observed
     Rana sphenocephala utricularia (Southern Leopard Frog) TMTC adults and metamorphs

Lastly, we made a quick search again at Cypress Island Preserve before heading home for the night and picked up a few finds.
