Dean's Woods, Knox Co., TN (12 Mar 2009)

Today the Comparative Vertebrate Biology class went out to Dean's Woods Wildflower Trail and the UTK Woodlot near the UT Medical Center.  Weather was overcast and cold with temps in the upper 30s to lower 40s and a brisk north breeze.  However, we did find a few things.

Amphibians and Reptiles:

     Desmognathus conanti (Spotted Dusky Salamander) 2 adults and 1 larva     
     Eurycea cirrigera (Southern Two-Lined Salamander) 2 adults and 10+ larvae
     Plethodon glutinosus (Northern Slimy Salamander) 1 adult
     Rana clamitans melanota (Green Frog) 1 juvenile
     Chrysemys picta (Northern Painted Turtle) 1 male
     Terrapene carolina carolina (Eastern Box Turtle) 1 shell

Birds:

     American Robin
     Northern Mockingbird
     American Crow
     Ruby-Crowned Kinglet
     House Sparrow
     Bluejay
     Eastern Towhee
     Mourning Dove
     Belted Kingfisher
     Mallard
     Wood Duck
     Great Blue Heron
     Eastern Phoebe
     Red-Tailed Hawk
     Rock Dove
     Black-Capped Chickadee

Fishes:

     Etheostoma simoterum (Snubnose Darter) 1 adult
     Nocomis micropogon (River Chub) 10+ juveniles

Mammals:

     Microtus pinetorum (Woodland Vole) 3


Eurycea cirrigera (Southern Two-Lined Salamander) Eggs


Plethodon glutinosus (Northern Slimy Salamander)


Rana clamitans melanota (Northern Green Frog)
