UTK Woodlot, Knox Co., TN (28 Mar 2009)

On Saturday the Comparative Vertebrate Biology class went out to the UTK Woodlot near the UT Medical Center again to seine for fish and turtles in the pond there.  Weather was overcast with temps in the 50s.  Not much in the pond but we did find a few things.

Amphibians and Reptiles:

     Desmognathus conanti (Spotted Dusky Salamander) 3 adults
     Plethodon glutinosus (Northern Slimy Salamander) 3 adults and 3 juveniles
     Rana clamitans melanota (Green Frog) tadpoles
     Terrapene carolina carolina (Eastern Box Turtle) 1 shell
     Thamnophis sirtalis (Eastern Gartersnake) 1 juvenile
     Trachemys scripta (Pond Slider) 2 adults and 1 dead juvenile

Birds:

     American Robin
     Northern Mockingbird
     American Crow
     Tree Swallow
     Bluejay
     Eastern Towhee
     Mourning Dove
     Belted Kingfisher
     Mallard
     Great Blue Heron
     Eastern Phoebe
     Rock Dove
     Black-Capped Chickadee

Fishes:

     Lepomis macrochirus (Bluegill) 4 juveniles

Mammals:

     Sciurus carolinensis (Eastern Gray Squirrel) 1

Thamnophis sirtalis (Eastern Gartersnake)


Desmognathus conanti (Spotted Dusky Salamander)


Plethodon glutinosus (Northern Slimy Salamander)


Trillium species


Cup fungus
