Campbell and Scott Cos., TN (16 May 2009)

With showers and thunderstorms moving into the area around dusk, Graham and I headed north to northern Campbell and extreme northeast Scott Counties in search of amphibians.  We really hoped to find Black Mountain Dusky Salamanders and other plethodontids that just range into Tennessee near the KY-TN state line but no success.  However, we did have several surprises on the road including a Green Salamander and a Four-Toed Salamander!

Campbell County, TN:

     Ambystoma opacum (Marbled Salamander) 7 metamorphs
     Aneides aeneus (Green Salamander) 1 adult
     Desmognathus conanti (Spotted Dusky Salamander) 1 adult
     Eurycea cirrigera (Southern Two-Lined Salamander) 1 adult
     Gyrinophilus p. porphyriticus (Northern Spring Salamander) 1 adult
     Hemidactylium scutatum (Four-Toed Salamander) 1 adult
     Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens (Red-Spotted Newt) 5 efts
     Pseudotriton ruber ruber (Northern Red Salamander) 2 adults and 1 juvenile
     Bufo americanus americanus (Eastern American Toad) 20+ observed and calling
     Hyla chrysoscelis (Cope's Gray Treefrog) TMTC observed and calling
     Pseudacris brachyphona (Mountain Chorus Frog) TMTC calling and observed
     Pseudacris crucifer crucifer (Northern Spring Peeper) TMTC calling
     Rana catesbeiana (American Bullfrog) 1 adult calling
     Rana clamitans melanota (Green Frog) 5 adults and juveniles
     Rana palustris (Pickerel Frog) 7 adults and juveniles
     Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen (Northern Copperhead) 2 adults DOR
     Thamnophis sirtalis (Eastern Gartersnake) 1 subadult

Scott Co., TN:

     Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens (Red-Spotted Newt) 1 eft
     Bufo americanus americanus (Eastern American Toad) 3 observed and a few calling
     Hyla chrysoscelis (Cope's Gray Treefrog) TMTC calling
     Pseudacris brachyphona (Mountain Chorus Frog) TMTC calling
     Pseudacris crucifer crucifer (Northern Spring Peeper) TMTC calling
     Rana clamitans melanota (Green Frog) 1 juvenile
     Rana palustris (Pickerel Frog) 2 juveniles
