Cades Cove, GSMNP (14 Feb 2009)

Several of us from UTK went up to Cades Cove to look for salamanders around Gum Swamp and Gurley Pond on Valentine's Day.  Gum Swamp still hadn't filled up yet but Gurley Pond held a considerable amount of water. Weather was perfect with temperatures in the low to mid 50s and light showers. Didn't do too bad for a few hours of searching:

Ambystoma opacum (Marbled Salamander) 2 adults
Ambystoma maculatum (Spotted Salamander) 2 adult males, 1 dead female, and some egg masses
Notophthalmus viridescens (Eastern Newt) 7 adults
Plethodon serratus (Southern Red-backed Salamander) 7 adults
Rana sylvatica (Wood Frog) 4 adults, 3 dead females, several egg masses
Pseudacris feriarum (Upland Chorus Frog), 2 adults
